Domestic Violence occurs when one person uses power and control over another. It presents itself in many forms, including the following:

  • Emotional Abuse
  • Name-calling, humiliation, playing mind games
  • Limiting contact with others, and using jealousy to justify it
  • Using gestures, looks and actions to create fear
  • Coercion and Threats
  • Threatening to hurt, leave, or kill
  • Economic Abuse
  • Limiting access to employment or financial resources
  • Privilege
  • Creating a difference of power in a relationship, making all decisions
  • Threatening to take children away, using them to relay messages, or harassing during visitation
  • Minimizing, denying and blaming
  • Making light of abuse, shifting responsibility for abusive behavior, minimizing
